Police suspect the shooting that claimed three lives and left a bystander critically injured, in Bellville’s Voortrekker Road, on Tuesday February 16, could be taxi-related.
According to provincial police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut, the bystander is recovering in hospital.
“Provincial detectives are probing the circumstances which led to the death of three people in what we believe was a taxi-related incident,” he said.
“One suspect, a 32-year-old male, was arrested and is currently being questioned. Two stolen firearms were recovered after the incident, and three licensed firearms were confiscated for further investigation.”
An eyewitness who did not want to be named said she and her colleagues had been startled by gunshots at about 3.25pm.
“I was actually busy with a client when we heard the gunshots from afar. When it came closer I just heard the receptionist scream, ”They’re shooting! Go down!“, so we all then ducked and dived under our tables. It sounded like twenty or thirty gunshots going off at the same time.
“I saw the one man lying across the street bleeding from the hip. We then heard traffic and police say that the man died on the spot.”
