The upgrades at the Kruskal Avenue in Bellville Central Business District (CBD) are expected to resume in June after the City terminated the contractor “as a result of consistent poor performance”.
The construction work aims to improve the infrastructure like stormwater and street lights, among others, and also aims to ease the pedestrian environment by creating wider side-walks and to better suit the needs of traders in the area.
“We anticipate that the new contractor will be on site at the start of June (depending on weather conditions) to commence with the work,” said Eddie Andrews, the mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment,
“The City advises that residents try to be careful around the area. We are aware of the impact of the delay on local businesses and traders. The project team is taking the necessary steps to make the site safe,” he said.
The City said it has been removing the rubble and levelling the site since last month.
The streets affected by the delay of the project include Kruskal Avenue, Blanckenberg Street, Cross Street, Church Street and Wilshammer Street in the CBD. Pedestrians currently have limited access along these roads, the City said.
