A Kraaifontein man accused of raping a teenage girl two years ago has been freed on R1000 bail.
Police confirmed the man was arrested on Monday last week, and last Friday, when he appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court, residents protested outside, calling for him to be denied bail.
A woman, who spoke outside the court on behalf of the alleged rape victim’s family, said the girl had been 15 when the man, who had been working as a scholar transport driver, had allegedly raped her.
“He raped her, and he continued to be inappropriate with her up until a week ago. He continued with messages and with comments and inappropriate conversations. A grown-up should never feel comfortable to have such discussions with minors.”
The police had got involved after the girl had made the accusations to her aunt two weeks ago, said the woman.
Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana said Kraaifontein police were investigating a rape case, and National Prosecution Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the accused had been charged with rape, and the case had been postponed to Wednesday June 5 for further investigation.
“His unopposed bail was set at R1000,” he said.
