Seven students from Reddam House Durbanville achieved a total of 10 “Top in South Africa” awards across A Levels, AS Levels and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSEs) on Monday last week.
The AS level is equivalent to matric and the A level is more suitable for pupils who want to increase their chances of getting accepted into a university, Monica Dunk, the head of administration at Reddam House Durbanville, previously told Northern News (“Durbanville pupils score high in Cambridge exams”).
As at the end of 2023, more than 120 Cambridge International centres offer this curriculum to South African students, according to executive head of Reddam House Durbanville, Barry Nieuwoudt.
These qualifications are benchmarked internationally, with the curriculum being offered in over 160 countries around the world.
The recipients of the awards in Reddam House Durbanville included Jake van der Westhuizen, 18, and Soyeon Lee, 18.
Jake was recognised as the Best Across Four AS-Levels, Chemistry at 95%, Computer Science at 95%, Mathematics at 99%, Physics at 96% and his average across the best four was 96%. He also secured first place in South Africa.
Asked to advise other pupils about study tips, he said: “Focus on a variety of subjects in a study session every day so as to maintain your engagement with course content. Perhaps most importantly, do not trade rest and time-taken to achieve a calm state of mind for more study time.”
He is currently studying a Bachelor of Science in Physics at the UCT and aiming to pursue further studies abroad.
Soyeon achieved Top in South Africa in English First Language with 91% and Computer Science with 95% at IGCSE level.
She is currently in Grade 12, continuing her studies at Reddam House Durbanville.
Soyeon said practising constantly was key in achieving her results.
“Writing as much code and essay as I could definitely aided me in getting these marks,” she added.
Other top achievers included Sarah Webber, Minkyum Kim, Matthew van Wyk, Emma Nel, and Razeena Ismail.
