A 38-year-old man was arrested at the Bellville taxi rank on rape charges on Saturday after he was identified by his alleged victim.
JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security, said: “Metro police officers were doing crime prevention foot patrols when they were approached by a woman who informed them that she and a colleague were raped in November 2019 after a break-in at their premises.”
Mr Smith added that the woman was able to lead police to the suspect and an arrest was made.
Mr Smith said the suspect was linked to various other cases.
On Friday August 7, the City’s traffic department impounded 21 cars and issued 247 fines during a crackdown on illegal taxis in Bellville.
The impounded vehicles were all sedans that were used as illegal taxis, said the City.
On Thursday August 6, traffic police impounded 13 cars and issued 170 fines at an illegal street racing event in Bellville South.
