Thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities gathered at the Bellville Velodrome for a day of fun, laughter and treats on Sunday August 21. More than 70 service clubs, religious organisations and schools took part in the annual One to One day, hosted by the Western Cape Forum for Intellectual Disability (WCFID). The Velodrome was transformed into a fun fair with music, shows, marching bands, gifts and delicious treats. The fair was historically based at the Good Hope Centre but organisers had to find a new venue this year. The One to One Day event was held in Cape Town for the first time in 1980 with 1 250 people with intellectual disabilities attending. Various clubs get involved by holding a stall, offering a game challenge or volunteering to be a “friend” to the handicapped. Shimone and Carla Brookes manned the stall for the Merriman Lions Club in Goodwood.
