Man slips off train and dies

Abalone was confiscated from a house in Plattekloof last week.
A 19-year-old man died after being hit by a train at Parow railway station on Friday May 24.

Police spokesman Captain Waynne Theunis said witnesses claimed the man had tried to board the Bellville-bound train as it had pulled away from the station, at 7.05am.
“The man tried to jump on to the train, but he slipped and landed under the train. He died on the scene and Parow police are investigating.”

In another incident,  a tip-off led Parow police to a house in Tecoma Street, in Plattekloof 2, on Wednesday May 23, where they found 660 dried abalone.

Captain Theunis said an estate agent had visited the house for an inspection at  1.30pm.

“When nobody answered the door, he went into the yard and was greeted with a bad smell. The agent discovered equipment used for drying abalone and abalone.”

The value of the abalone has yet to be determined and no arrests were made.
