Two traffic officers have been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of R3 000 from a taxi driver.
The cops were supposed to impound the van but allegedly let the driver go after he gave them the money.
The traffic officers have since been suspended. The officers, who work at the Kuils River traffic department, are facing criminal charges of bribery and defeating the ends of justice.
It is understood they pulled the taxi driver over during a stop-and-search procedure but allegedly accepted a bribe when the driver offered them R5 000 to let him go.
The driver had R3 000 in his possession which the traffic cops allegedly accepted.
The alleged incident took place at the Total Garage in Kuils River on Saturday March 31.
The driver then contacted the authorities and an investigation ensued.
Both traffic officials were arrested and detained at Kuils River police station on Friday April 6.
Richard Bosman, the City’s executive director for safety and security, said the officers had been provisionally suspended pending an internal disciplinary hearing.
“The City does not condone any illegal behaviour on the part of staff members and will deal with the matter swiftly and in line with City processes.”
