Police are investigating after six men robbed a jewellery store at a Kuils River mall.
The robbers held up Zevenwacht Mall’s American Swiss store at 10am on Wednesday April 6, taking cash, jewellery and staff cellphones.
An employee at the store was reluctant to speak to the Northern News and referred us to a woman, who identified herself as an American Swiss area manager but wouldn’t give her name. She confirmed the store had been robbed.
According to Kuils River police spokeswoman Sergeant Liesel Beukes, an employee was busy in the shop when six men came in. One of them approached her with a gun and took her to the back of the shop to open the safe.
“The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and loose items of which the value is currently unknown,” Sergeant Beukes said.
The robbers had left in a grey Volkswagen Polo, headed towards Eerste River, she said. No shots were fired and there were no reports of injuries.
The robbery follows a cash-in-transit heist at the mall last month when armed men got away in a silver-grey Ford Figo with an undisclosed amount of cash
In 2018, another jewellery store was robbed at the mall.
Zevenwacht general manager Jacques Erasmus said: “The safety and security of Zevenwacht Mall’s patrons, partners and service providers remains a priority and we regret that the incident took place. Zevenwacht Mall is cooperating with the authorities and the investigation.”
He said a security guard on patrol had noticed “two suspects” at the shop at 10.05am.
“He entered the store opposite and informed the control room, whereafter the suspects noticed him and fled the scene.
“The officer gave chase and recorded the details of the getaway car. The details of the incident have been reported to the SAPS. No one was injured during the incident. However, and undisclosed amount of cash, jewellery and staff cellphones were stolen.”
