Passenger train catches fire in Century City

A passenger train caught fire as it approached Century City station at around noon on Monday November 20.

Metrorail spokeswoman Riana Scott said the fire burnt three carriages and affected fibre-optic cables leading to the nearby train-traffic control centre.

The line was closed while firefighters fought the blaze and assessed the damage.

Ms Scott said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the fire. That, along with the extent and cost of the damage, would be confirmed after Transnet Freight Rail and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa had done an assessment.

The City’s Fire and Rescue spokesman Theo Layne said the train fire had set surrounding vegetation alight.

“However, there was no danger to property. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage.”
