A leading teacher education provider has formed a partnership with non-governmental organisation, Teach The Nation, that will see prospective student teachers with degrees/diplomas enrolling in a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in order to fully qualify as teachers.
Recruited Teach the Nation fellows from Mitchell’s Plain and Kraaifontein will be able to enrol for the PGCE qualification at no cost to themselves, with classes starting in February 2021.
The PGCE qualification was first introduced by STADIO Faculty of Education at the start of 2020 and is aimed at students with an undergraduate degree or appropriate diploma wishing to develop the knowledge and skills to become fully-qualified classroom teachers.
Additional skills for these fellows will be provided through Teach The Nation leadership development programmes.
Professor Patrick Bean, executive dean of STADIO Faculty of Education, said the collaboration with Teach The Nation points towards a larger priority for the tertiary education provider to align themselves with community-orientated partners.
“We are committed to developing quality teachers from the community, for the community, which takes place in the community; and we are grateful that we’re able to provide the platform to do so,” he says.
“With the exceptional work done by Teach The Nation to not only provide quality educators to underprivileged schools, but to also train them to become leaders within the community, we believe we have found a partner who aligns with our vision,” Professor Bean adds.
The Teach The Nation cohort of fellows will be equally split between those who already have a teaching qualification and graduate professionals from diverse academic backgrounds, who have received a calling to become involved in social change through education.
The collaboration between Stadio’s School of Education and Teach The Nation will see these fellows obtaining the official qualification necessary to become teachers.
The PGCE qualification will be delivered via different modes of learning incorporated into a flexible hybrid learning experience. This learning model allows the student to select, on a weekly basis, the mode that best suits their situation.
This includes, for example, live learning events at a campus or live streamed lectures at remote learning centres. Other modes of learning include live webinars on students’ laptops or smartphones as well as recorded material loaded on YouTube.
