A Bellville-based organisation helping the city’s homeless held a thanksgiving church service earlier this month to mark its 10th anniversary.
Later this year, Mould Empower Serve (MES) will cap off its celebrations with a gala fund-raiser dinner, where Elvis Blue will perform.
MES is a Christian-based organisation that tackles poverty in Cape Town and other South African cities. Cape Town branch manager Lilly Franks said it took root here when the Bellville Care Mission was renamed and registered as the MES Cape Town branch in 2008.
“Over the past decade, we have established a strong outreach and social relief component that serves the immediate and short-term needs of the homeless and unemployed community.”
Ms Franks said the launch of a job-rehabilitation programme as well social-work and occupational-therapy services in 2014 had paved the way for the further expansion of vocational-skills training and job placement in 2015.
In 2016, MES started providing social work services and youth programmes to the tenants of MES’s sister company, Madulammoho Housing Association. In May 2017 it opened The Safe Space, a shelter for street people in the area.
Tickets for the dinner, on Wednesday October 24, are R10 000 a table of 10 or R600 each. Proceeds will support the work done by MES.
