The Durbanville Junior Majorettes Club is set to represent the Western Cape in a national competition in Gauteng later this year.
The Federation of Dance Drill, Cheerleading and Majorette Sport South Africa (FDDCMSA) national championships will take place from Friday June 28 to Wednesday July 3.
Durbanville Junior Majorettes Club has 36 drummies aged 7 to 13 and this is the sixth year the club is competing nationally.
“Last year was our best season thus far. We came second for Small Drill and Large Drill, and this year, we are going for gold,” said head coach Nicky Metcalf.
According to Ms Metcalf, each club is responsible for its own competition expenses including transport, accommodation, food and clothing and this can amount to almost R300 000.
She is urging the public to support the club’s BackaBuddy campaign.
“Due to the economic crisis that most families face, we continue to take little to no fees from 2020. We rely heavily on fundraising and sponsorships,” she said.
