A call has been made for the Bellville community to report areas where used syringe needles are found discarded.
The Voortrekker City Improvement District (CID) and TB HIV Care non-profit organisation launched a programme last month that aimed to combat the prevalence of heroin drug injectors and the transmission of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis.
The Step-Up Programme Bicycle Initiative, launched on Wednesday February 28, sees an employee travelling by bike to pick up the used needles from the streets.
From Monday February 26 until Monday this week, 528 needles have already been collected according to Derek Bock, the chief operation officer of the Voortrekker CID.
“It is important to recognise the individual operating the bike as a valued member of the community. He works tirelessly to improve the cleanliness and safety of the streets,” he said.
Mr Bock said the collection of the needles is happening daily and it will not stop.
“This initiative will ensure that no area is overlooked… to stop the spread of HIV and other communicable diseases.”
Mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment, Eddie Andrews, applauded the two organisations for their contribution.
If you see any discarded needles, contact the Voortrekker CID on 021 823 6713.
