Angry Scottsdene residents want speed humps in Buiten Crescent after a speeding taxi knocked over a 13-year-old boy on Sunday July 21.
Margret Flavers said her son, Kyle, had bruises and swelling on his face, right arm and shoulder. He had been taken to Kraaifontein day hospital, but was now back home and recovering well. “His arm is in a sling. I am happy that he is doing good because it could have been worse,” she said.
Ms Flavers said speeding taxis were a common problem in Buiten Crescent.
“We are always warning one another to be careful when crossing the road,” she said.
Kraaifontein police spokesman Captain Hein Hendricks said a 29-year-old man was arrested for reckless and negligent driving and was due to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on Thursday August 1.
“The suspect was driving a white Toyota Quantum when he knocked over a 13-year-old boy. The victim sustained injuries to the right side of his face and right shoulder,” he said.
More than 100 residents took to the scene of the accident on Sunday afternoon, just after 3pm.
In a video on the Kraailove community group Facebook page, men could be seen using spades, hammers and pickaxes to loosen tar on Buiten Crescent while the community cheered them on and police watched from a distance.
According to residents, Buiten Crescent is used as a race track, especially for taxi drivers.
Arnold Klaasen called on ward councillors to “take charge before the community takes matters into their own hands.”
Mayco member for urban management and Ward 7 councillor, Grant Twigg, said a meeting with residents about speed humps had been scheduled for Monday July 22 but due to bad weather it had been postponed to Thursday, July 25 at the Northdene Hall in Eoan Avenue at 7pm.
Mr Twigg described setting up speed humps in the Scottsdene area as a “work in progress.”
“Almost all the streets in Scottsdene are currently been worked on, they will be tarred and speed humps will be set up.
“I will discuss the way forward for Buiten Crescent with the community at the next meeting,” he said.
