Police are investigating a culpable homicide case, after an elderly woman apparently lost control of her car on the N1, near Durban Road, and ran over three men sleeping on a traffic island, killing two of them.
The woman is reportedly in her late 70s.
ER24 paramedics, who were on their way to another incident, came across the scene just after 8am, on Saturday February 11, and declared two men, believed to be 30 to 40 years old, dead.
Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa said one man was left seriously injured and was taken to hospital.
ER24 said the woman had injured her forehead.
Bellville police spokeswoman Henrietta van Niekerk said two of the men were traders, one from Delft and the other from Khayelitsha.
The survivor works as a car guard in Oakdale. This was confirmed by Bellville police investigating officer Warrant Officer Shaun Jansen.
Warrant Officer Van Niekerk said the circumstances leading up to the incident were unclear and police were waiting for autopsy results before the case could go to court.
