Work on Amandel Road in Kuils River to ease traffic congestion, has been welcomed by a civic leader.
According to a City statement, the existing dual carriageway on Amandel Road will be extended by upgrading the current single carriageway between the Bottelary River bridge and Church Street. This will include the construction of a secondary dualled road-over-river bridge that will run parallel to the existing bridge across the Bottelary River. A separate cycling lane will be incorporated from the roundabout at Langverwacht Road through to Soneike Mall.
Work started on Monday October 17 and it is expected to be finished in July 2024 if there are no unforeseen delays.
Isaac Jenecke, chairman of the Kuils River Civic Association, said it was a “good thing” that the City was developing and improving urban transport in the area.
“The traffic inside Kuils River is a problem, as getting into Sarepta Way from the residential blocks is a problem. There is congestion in front of Kuils River Primary school, which bottles up. Also it is difficult to travel to Bellville and inside around Kuils River without private vehicles,” he said, calling for taxi routes to be improved.
Ward 11 councillor Wouter de Vos said the project would alleviate traffic congestion in Kuils River. “Our people will get to work, school or where they may need to be much faster and will not stand still in traffic,” he said.
A traffic circle would replace the traffic lights in Church Street, he added.
“There will also be a non-motorised transport facility as part of this, a cycling lane as well as a pedestrian walkway.”
Mayoral committee member for urban mobility Rob Quintas said: “The upgrade will have a positive effect on urban mobility, which is a key factor in promoting economic growth.”
