Kalkfontein informal settlement, which is getting toilets, taps and electricity connections on 833 serviced plots, was visited by mayoral committee member for area east, Anda Ntsodo, last week.
The developments in the settlement are part of the City’s upgrading of informal settlements programme.
Each household will receive either a title deed or tenure certificate after the upgrade.
Mr Ntsodo said the City had gone to great lengths to include the community in the programme and residents were represented on the project steering committee.
Labour was sourced from surrounding communities wherever possible, he said.
“The City of Cape Town is facing an ever increasing demand for housing and informal settlements are likely to remain a feature in the city for the foreseeable future. This requires us to come up with innovative ways to uplift our residents in the interim,” said Mr Ntsodo.
The upgrade was set for completion in the 2018/2019 financial year if all goes as planned.
