Parow West Neighbourhood Watch says it had an overwhelming response to its Easter appeal for residents to donate a plate of Sunday lunch or items for food hampers for a neighbour in need.
Chairman Shakir “Shrek” Smith thanked the public for supporting the drive. “Our community deserves a round of applause for pulling this off at such short notice.”
All safety measures and physical distancing had been maintained throughout, he said.
Items were dropped at the homes of watch members Tanya Liebenburg and Erica Jacobs.
Sector 2 commander Warrant Officer Marco Geldenhuys collected hot food for 21 police officers on shift in the Parow precinct. The watch also provided meals for five Byers Security patrol staff and four families in the surrounding area. They delivered hampers with sufficient food to see 15 families of four through more than two days.
Debbie Scott called Mr Smith to thank everyone for the food parcel. “We appreciate it a lot as we were wondering what we will give our kids to eat tonight, and then the food parcel arrived. God bless, and thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts,” Ms Scott said. Another woman phoned in tears to thank everyone for the food hamper.
Food donations to the value of R9000 had been collected, Mr Smith said, adding that R750 in cash had also been received and would be deposited in the watch’s bank account. Donations were still coming in and would be used for the next drive, he said.
