The Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) is running a competition with more than R30 000 in prize money at stake for innovators who have solutions to transport and housing shortages in the area as well as social ills, such as crime and grime, unemployment and drug abuse.
“Like many urban areas in South Africa, Tygerberg faces a number of challenges that require out-of-the-box thinking to deliver creative and workable solutions,” said the non-profit’s CEO Chris O’Connor.
The top projects will be presented to a panel of judges.
“Think of social innovation meets the Dragon’s Den,” Mr O’Connor said in a reference to the television series where entrepreneurs vie for financing.
Anyone can enter provided their solution benefits the greater Tygerberg region. An initial submission is required by Wednesday April 13. Five finalists will be named a week later.
Finalists will have a chance to refine their projects with the help of innovation consultancy Idea Couture, before presenting them to the judges in May. The two projects chosen will each receive R32 000.
