More than 900 expanded public works programme (EPWP) recruits have graduated with Grade 10-equivalent qualifications in environment practice.
The recruits completed the course as part of the City’s Special Cleaning Project, which is part of a strategy to minimise waste and ensure that only non-recyclables end up in landfills.
The graduation ceremony was held at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow on Friday July 7.
The recruits were able to study the module through a partnership with the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority.
“With high levels of unemployment in our country, the City is working hard to ensure that we use EPWP opportunities to close this gap through skills development. We now ensure that every EPWP opportunity is coupled with a training programme,” said mayoral committee member for urban waste management Grant Twigg.
He said the graduates, who now have an NQF-level 2 qualification, were now in a better position to find a foothold in a growing industry.
