A northern suburbs drum majorettes club is looking for new members.
The five-year-old Durbanville Majorettes Club was started at Curro Durbanville and is now based at Aristea Primary School, in Kraaifontein.
According to Yvonne Viljoen, the club’s chairwoman, it has a junior team of drummies for Grades 1 to 7 and a senior team for Grades 8 to 12.
The club has 40 girls in the junior squad but needs more seniors to fill out the 20-member senior squad.
“Being part of a majorette team not only teaches you sporting skills but important life skills too, which include life-long friendships, self-confidence, trust, teamwork, time management, discipline and commitment,” said Ms Vijoen.
According to her, the club’s senior and junior squads competed in the national champs in Bloemfontein last year, achieving fifth to first places in various categories. This was followed by first and third places in various categories at the world champs in Poland.
The club is also seeking sponsorship needed to provide the drummies with uniforms, tracksuits and other necessities…
