This month Brackenfell library celebrates 30 years at its current home in Paradys Road.
The building was officially opened in June 1987 by the then Administrator of the Cape Province, Gene Louw.
Brackenfell got its own library on January 19, 1976, and the library was then part of the municipal building. When that space became too small a separate library was built on the spot where it is standing today.
The library had its main birthday celebration on Saturday June 24, which was attended by nearly 50 of the former and current staff.
One of the late staff members, Dalena Vollgraaff, wrote a book about the history of Brackenfell after her retirement. Her book, Brackenfell…Van Toeka Tot Nou is a valuable work that is almost in daily use by the library patrons.
Some of the other former staff members that are also published authors are Dirna Ackermann, Eugene Black and Truida Heymann. On average, more than 50 000 items are borrowed from the library every month.
