The Bellville Association of Arts (ArtB) which has a gallery in the Bellville gallery centre, has been helping to launch the careers of Cape Town’s artists for more than 40 years.
According to ArtB’s treasurer, Anne Wells, the non-profit has about 200 members. Each member pays a yearly fee of R130 and membership is open to all artists.
“In March we have our members-only exhibition and in June we have an event known as Tiny Treasures, where each member has to produce a piece that is scaled down to a 20cm x 20cm representation. In August we have the Vuleka competition which is open to all artists who have not had a solo show in the last three years. This competition is a real highlight for us, and the winner can expect a prize of up to R20 000.”
Through the years, many artists have used ArtB to launch their careers, including 32-year-old Mzi Funo who has been a member since 2008.
“Before I joined this organisation, I was a nobody in the art shows across the country that I can count,” said Mr Funo, who paints in oils.
“ArtB has really been the platform for my success. One of the main advantages of being part of the group has been the fact that I get to spend time with other artists and get to pick their brains about the latest trends and also general advice.” Â
