Ten people suffered minor to moderate injuries when a train carriage derailed near Bellville station on Friday August 18.
Metrorail confirmed a carriage of train 3206 en route to Cape Town, derailed at 7.54am, while approaching platform 11.
Paramedics arrived at the scene at about 8.15am, where they found five passengers near the platform and another five on the far side of the track.
“They sustained scrapes and bruises while one person sustained a moderate injury to her knee,” said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak. “The injured were transported to Karl Bremer and
Tygerberg hospitals for further care.”
Metrorail said the commuters had been injured when they jumped out of the carriage in panic.
The train derailment caused delays of up to an hour on the northern line, with commuters running from platform to platform at Bellville station to catch the next train.
Platform 11 was closed as officials conducted on-site investigations to assess any possible damage to infrastructure before the line was re-opened.
Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker said Bellville was a strategic station on its northern network.
