Durbanville singer and songwriter Zybrandt has released his second Afrikaans single, Kamoefleer.
His debut track titled Anders, which was introduced earlier this year, reached number two on Jacaranda FM’s SA Top 20.
Kamoefleer is about exploring different perspectives within oneself. Zybrandt explains: “Our feelings and daily tasks form small particles around us. The energies between people are constantly changing and sometimes it creates tension. Subconsciously our concerns and worries continuously play a part in how we navigate our lives. It is impossible to map out one’s way forward by just having a ‘street view.’ It is best to also look at it from the top.”
The video for Kamoerfleer was made by Jeremy Farber from For Tomorrow Productions.
“The Kamoefleer music video is a combination of digital drawings, video footage and motion graphics that portrays Zybrandt going on an adventure in a magical book,” says Farber.
“The drawings were done on an iPad with each scene being separated into foreground, middle and background so that it could use zooming and focus effects to make it interesting visually. We rented a different outfit for each scene and Zybrandt was filmed against a white wall singing and acting a bit in each part. His character was then cut out in the editing program and combined with the drawings to give it a painterly, scrapbook look and feel. The video took about three months to make and consists of 19 scenes, eight outfits and over 150 drawings.”
Zybrandt has been playing the piano and making music since he was a child.
He got his first electric guitar at the age of 15 and has been involved with three bands since the 90s: Velve, Downonthefirst and December Lanterns.
It is only now that Zybrandt has found a gap to release his first Afrikaans tracks. He says: “I started recording some Afrikaans tunes while we were in studio working on some tracks for December Lanterns. I am excited that the time is finally right for me to share these Afrikaans songs with the world. The feedback for my first single Anders has been amazing and I am excited to now introduce Kamoefleer.”
