Goodwood United Soccer Club says it is ready to reopen.
Earlier this year the volunteer-run club was left in the dark when its landlord, the City of Cape Town, disconnected its electricity over an outstanding bill of R35 000 https://www.northernnews.co.za/news/soccer-club-in-the-dark/. The bill has since been paid with help from other sports clubs in the sports precinct on the corner of Milton and Hamilton roads.
At the time, Neville Solomons, the club’s chairman, said they took children off the streets and gave them a safe place to play soccer, but the playing field was in a bad state and the building had been ransacked and vandalised.
Dr Zahid Badroodien, mayoral committee member for community services and health, said the City had done several repairs at the sports complex before lockdown including replacing the roof of the soccer-club building and burglar proofing roller shutter doors. Dr Badroodien said other improvements included rehabilitation of the playing fields, irrigation repairs, extending the treated effluent supply and the installation of floodlights at the rugby field.
Last week there was much activity at the complex with grass on the playing fields being cut and the rugby and cricket clubhouses open and occupied by mask-wearing patrons.
