A woman died after the taxi she was travelling in crashed into a concrete wall in the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa, the driver lost control of the vehicle at about 3.20am, on Old Paarl Road, in Brackenfell, on Saturday September 9.
Mr Africa said the taxi “burst through the middle island” before crashing into the wall near Regal Auto.
Seven other passengers also sustained minor to severe injuries, ER24 spokeswoman Annine Siddall said.
“ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene and found all the men and women trapped inside the taxi,” Ms Siddall said.
Fire and Rescue personnel had to use the jaws of life to remove all the passengers from the taxi.
They were transported to nearby hospitals.
Byron la Hoe, the spokesman for the Department of Transport and Public Works, said four drunken drivers had also been arrested in the area at the weekend.
