A first-year Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) student died after being swept off a rock by waves at Maiden’s Cove, Camps Bay, on Saturday September 2.
CPUT spokeswoman Lauren Kansley said Thato Bono, from Bloemfontein, had been on a residence outing.
Craig Lambinon, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman, said eyewitnesses had described seeing a wave wash six people off a rock close to the water’s edge.
Bystanders had pulled the young woman from the water among the rocks and started CPR, which had been continued by an NSRI rescue swimmer.
Otherrescueservices responded, and paramedics continued CPR before Ms Bono was taken to hospital, where further attempts to resuscitate her failed.
Ms Kansley said Ms Bono’s parents had been notified of her death and were now in Cape Town.
Counselling would be made available to the other students on the trip.
A memorial service was held yesterday, Wednesday September 6.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
