Kuils River mezzo soprano Christine Bam was named a winner in the “classical voice” section of the Fine Music Radio (FMR) Bursary Trust Awards, held on Wednesday May 10, at the Baxter Theatre.
She has been a member of the Cape Town Opera Chorus since 2018.
The competition, which celebrates the best of classical, jazz and African music, started in 2009 and was established by the Rolf-Stephan Nussbaum Foundation with the purpose of providing scholarships, bursaries or awards for students studying for a performance diploma or degree in music.
Ms Bam, who lives in Kuils River, said: “I am so grateful to FMR and the Rolf-Stephan Nussbaum Foundation for their generosity in hosting this bursary competition and supporting artists continuously and I would also like to thank my voice teacher Violina Anguelov-Hobbs.”
Earlier this year, Ms Bam won second prize at the Friends of Opera in Cape Town competition that was also held at the Baxter Theatre. She is doing her postgraduate diploma in opera at the UCT Opera School, under the guidance of Anguelov-Hobbs and maestro Jeremy Silver.
She is expected to be seen onstage in the Cape Town Opera’s upcoming production of Tosca in September at the Artscape theatre.
The “classical instrumental” and “classical voice” sections of the competition finals will be broadcast on FMR on June 4 at 2pm.
