What was a normal Sunday afternoon for a Brackenfell family, turned into a nightmare when they returned to their home in Doringboom Street to find it had been broken into.
Melody-Ann Mostert said she and her family had left their home at 6.40pm to pick up their daughter from Sunday school before taking a detour to visit friends in Ruwari, Brackenfell.
The visit was stopped abruptly by a text message at 8.30pm from a neighbour, informing her that her alarm had gone off.
Ms Mostert said the neighbour then went outside to inspect, where he spotted three men walking out of their house.
“When we eventually got home at 8.47pm the police, neighbourhood watch and armed response were already in the house.”
She said her 13-year-old daughter was “shocked and cried” after she saw what had happened at her home.
Ms Mostert said her daughter didn’t want to sleep home that evening.
“I walked in and saw the TV is gone in the room the other TV was missing – they also took a laptop in the bag. I was relieved we were not at home at the time,” Ms Mostert said.
“This will take some time to recover from.”
She said a neighbour frantically drove after the vehicle trying to get a number plate but the suspects’ car got away.
The family said it believed the burglary was committed by a crowbar gang.
Warrant Officer Erica Crous, Brackenfell police spokeswoman, confirmed a case of housebreaking and theft is being investigated by the cops.
Warrant Officer Crous said the suspects gained entry through the front door, which “was forced open by an unknown object.” She said electronic equipment was taken.
“According to our records SAPS members (got to) the scene within six minutes of receiving the complaint,” Warrant Officer Crous said. No arrests have been made yet.
* Police spokeswoman, Nasiphi Same, said the Kraaifontein SAPS are requesting the assistance of the public in tracing Zamuxolo Hebeshe in connection with the killing of Mawande Saliti on Friday February 19.
“According to reports on Friday at about 10.05am in Pedro Street, Wallacedene, the victim sustained a fatal stab wound in his chest during an argument ,” Ms Same said.
