There will be a prescribed ecological burn at Tygerberg Nature Reserve between now and Friday May 25, depending on favourable weather conditions.
The City of Cape Town said approximately half a hectare (50 x 50 square metres) of an old ploughed field in the reserve will be burnt to promote the restoration of critically endangered Swartland shale renosterveld.
Although smoke may be minimal due to the plot size, residents living adjacent to the reserve near Welgemoed, may be temporarily affected. Surrounding residents are advised to keep their windows shut while burning takes place.
Laundry should be taken off washing lines to prevent odour contamination from smoke.
Staff from the City’s Environmental Management Department, supported by the Working on Fire staff, will conduct the burn using manual fire management methods. Should it become necessary, only harvested rain water and non-potable water will be used. It is unlikely that any water will be needed due to the limited size of the area, the City said.
Residents can send objections to the City’s Air Quality Department at Bronwyn.Davidson@capetown.gov.za, within seven days of the publication of this notice. For more information, contact Tygerberg Nature Reserve on 021 444 8971 orTygerberg.naturereserve@capetown.gov.za
