Fashion designers are looking forward to making recycling an infectious trend at this year’s “Trashion Show”, which will be held in Fisantekraal tomorrow, Saturday June 3.
The Trashion show aims to showcase creative ideas for reuse and waste reductions through fashion and is hosted by the Mosselbank River Conservation team (MRCT) and Afriworld, according to organiser Danielle Cronje.
“The best designs will be rewarded prizes. We have over 30 artists that have signed up this year to participate in the children’s, youth and adults categories,” she said.
The audience at the Fisantekraal Community Hall can also expect dramatic and musical performances about waste from local artists.
“The artists who will be displaying their fashion designs, all hail from Klipheuwel, Fisantekraal and Kraaifontein. The event will also act as a fund-raiser as the ticket money will go towards the Mosselbank River Conservation team’s projects,” she said.
The MRCT are a group of volunteers that aim to promote environmental education in Fisantekraal and stamp out pollution in the area.
Kraaifontein resident, Tracy-Lee Speller, says that she and her daughter, Olola-yemi, have worked together on their dress design.
“My daughter will be wearing the costume, we made it together. The materials we used are bubble wrap, potato sacks, toilet paper rolls, rope, strings and bits of paper we found lying around the house,” Ms Speller said.
Greenville resident, Ju-ane’ Maans, says she is also a volunteer for the MRCT and often attends their clean-ups.
“I will be modelling a dress made from plastic bags, tin cans and other recyclable materials. I was inspired to join when I saw the productive ways in which you turn trash into treasure. I love making old things look new. I’m looking forward to seeing all the designs the artists will showcase at the fashion show and learning more about recycling,” she said.
Tickets cost R20 at the gate, which will open at 10.30am, at the Fisantekraal Community Hall and the fashion show is from 11am until 3pm.
