UWC shock table-topping Durbanville

UWC Cricket Club pulled a stunner at the weekend when they beat first-placed Durbanville by 67 runs during a Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Premier League fixture at home.

The fifth-placed side, occupied by a bunch of students with a winning mentality, and coached by Stephen Jones, were out to seek revenge following their last outing against Durbanville when they lost by 24 runs.

UWC won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a score of 143/9 after 50 overs.

However, the real shocker came when their opponents, log leaders of the Premier League, Durbanville, struggled to put bat to ball and scored just 76 all-out in 40.1 overs against the students.

Jones owes praise to his young bowlers.

UWC’s opening bowler, Sabier Mallie picked up 6/12 and four maidens in 10 overs. Hos bowling economy was 1.2 runs per over.

Another bowling attack came from fifth-place change bowler, Emmanuel Seberame who, after 10 overs picked up 3/19 and five maidens, with a bowling economy of 1.7 runs per over.

UWC have now won eight out of their 13 games with six bonus points and a game in hand. They are on 38 points, three points away from fourth-placed Cape Town Cricket Club.

UWC will play their next fixture against seventh-placed Claremont away on Saturday.

In other Premier League results, Langa suffered their 14th defeat of the season when they lost to third-placed Bellville Cricket Club by six wickets in Langa on Saturday.

Second-placed Rondebosch beath eight-placed Brackenfell by 54 runs thanks to some good batting by Bradley Barnes who scored 53 of 48 balls.

Rondebosch cored 211 runs, and limited Brackenfell to 157 all-out.

This coming weekend is filled with some blockbuster fixtures as Durbanville will look to redeem themselves against ninth-placed Victoria Catalyst away, while Milnerton will try to pull up their socks against a dangerous second-placed Rondebosch at home.
