GoalMOUTH is a weekly feature placing the spotlight on various sporting codes, tackling the brutal truth and chasing their rivals — those who try to evade a bit of banter… It’s all about the banter!
The English Premier League kicked off last week, but not as exciting as we thought it would be.
Manchester United labouring against a Fulham team that looks hungry, but in the end, sneaking the victory with a debut goal by Joshua Zirkzee.
Hold on, here is the interesting part…
The rest of the Premier League kicked off the following day and starting us off was that famous off red team, Liverfool.
Liverpool travelled to newly promoted Ipswich Town, winning 2 – 0 and then ending up at the top of the table, with Liverfool supporters actually believing it could be their season.
Something we hear every year, “this is our season”, and then halfway through the season, things don’t go according to plan, and then suddenly we have to hear about referees, teams that are being favoured and players that were needed that could have helped and then obviously the famous, “next year is our year”.
Just like United, Liverpool did not look convincing at all, labouring to their 2 – 0 victory, but nobody will mention that it’s a newly promoted side that were supposed to be thrashed by this partially good Liverpool team.
It was definitely not the opening of the season we all were looking forward to, but it did give an indication of what we can expect.
Teams looked shaky and nervous, with nobody really stealing the show on opening weekend.
The champions stumbled to a 2 – 0 victory at Stamford Bridge against a Chelsea squad that has probably a million players in it. The owner of Chelsea has officially moved up the ranks and is seen as one of the highest spenders to have taken over a team playing in the Premier League.
Todd Boehlly has spent over a billion pounds on players, but is lucky to have half of them available due to injury and also wins every four games.
Bold move by bringing in the former Leicester City manager, Enzo Maresca into the club, especially as he has no experience at all in the league.
Anyway, only time will tell whether this manager will be able to coach this squad, which clearly has too many players.
Chelsea bought so much, they forgot to sell and once they decided to sell, players realised the pay was good and did not want to leave, leaving them with such a large squad of players all on hefty salaries.
A team that surprised me on the weekend was that stubborn Brighton & Hove Albion, who has become a nemesis for some teams and voodoo for others, but they fail to do anything significant in a season as they just don’t have it.
Brighton always discovers some great talents, who end up being snapped up by the bigger clubs and they just end up going missing.
If Brighton had kept the players they let go, they could have been a force to be reckoned with, but they are the complete opposite of Chelsea. They do not have an owner splashing cash and their squad will be lucky to reach 30 in a season.
The season looks like it will be a close contest this year, with many of the smaller teams having boosted their squads, with only Liverpool deciding to trust last year’s squad with their new Dutch manager.
They complained about our Dutch manager last season, made fun of the dude and now the unknown Arno Slot is suddenly the new best thing.
Liverfool, stop being foolish please. We are one game into the season and we don’t want any further promises to be made.
Looking forward to round two with a few juicy encounters on offer and don’t forget — we are practically just over two weeks away from the first Liverpool and Manchester United clash — are you guys ready?
