There was joy in Wallacedene last week as residents received title deeds to homes some have lived in for more than 20 years.
Mayor Patricia de Lille and Mayco member for area north Suzette Little handed out the 20 title deeds during a ceremony.
Ms De Lille spoke to residents at the packed Boesak Road community hall before joining title-deed recipients at their homes.
Enoch Mdebuka, his wife, Lulama, and Dina Afrikaner were among those who were thrilled to finally have proof of ownership for their homes.
Ms De Lille said: “Handing over ownership of property which residents have occupied for many years is very important and special to me.
“It is more than just a piece of paper. It is a symbol of victory over the imbalances of our unjust past.
“The transfer of ownership and handing over of title deeds is in line with the City’s commitment to redressing the imbalances of apartheid, where people were denied ownership of property.
“Since then the City has ramped up its delivery of handing over title deeds. Since June last year, the City has handed out 1 957 title deeds in areas across Cape Town.”
The City will be running roadshows from Bloekombos to Hout Bay until April, where residents can either collect their title deeds or check on the status of their finalisation.
