Wake Up Africa, a new song by Join Bands Not Gangs, aims to promote unity among South Africans.
The song is described as “an anthem to bless and encourage the people of Africa” by its composer and founder of the group, Karien de Waal, of Durbanville.
With additional lyrics by Lebohang Kgapola and Allou April, the song features vocals by Shana Ray, Lebohang Kgapola, Serrano Johnson and the Zolani Youth Choir from Montagu.
“Touching on topics like fatherlessness, we hope to speak life over our nation in song form. By also incorporating some of the lyrics of the National Anthem, we want to make South Africans feel proud when they hear this song. We hope the song can bring our people together as we bless our nation together with words,” Ms De Waal said.
The song and its music video took over six months to complete and nearly 70 people were involved in the production.
The song was launched on Friday on top of the Table Mountain and performed at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre as part of an early Youth Day celebration. Join Bands Not Gangs performed the song again on Monday during SABC 3’s Expresso morning show.
