Two killed, one wounded in alleged extortion racket

Kraaifontein police are investigating two shooting incidents that occurred minutes apart in Bloekombos and Scottsville.

Two Kraaifontein men were gunned down while sitting in a car in Bloekombos on Monday May 16. Minutes later another man, 26, was wounded in Scottsville.

Provincial police spokesman Colonel André Traut said the two men, in their 30s, were killed in Annemeit Street, Bloekombos, at 7.15pm.

In another incident in Nellie Street, Scottsville, at 8.40pm, a 26-year-old man was wounded in a shooting.

Colonel Traut said both incidents were committed by unknown suspects.

IOL reported on Tuesday May 18 that community police forum chairman Robert Bisset linked the shootings to an extortion racket in the area.

The Kraaifontein killings follow the fatal shootings of 13 people in Khayelitsha at the weekend.

’’At present, there seems to be an extortion ring operating in Kraaifontein,“ Mr Bisset told IOL. ”(It’s the) same modus operandi as other areas. We, as the CPF, will not tolerate this extortion in our areas and will get community members involved to assist to bring the culprits to book.“
