Bellville South, Wesfleur and Weltevreden libraries celebrated milestone birthdays recently with a combined century of existence.
The Bellville South Library celebrated 50 years, Wesfleur is 30 years old and Weltevreden is 20.
Mayoral committee member for community services and health, Dr Zahid Badroodien, said: “Libraries are part and parcel of their communities and are not only the keepers of history, but an integral part of it. They have always been safe spaces for learning, growing and inspiring creativity; and have watched over communities as they’ve changed and expanded.”
Bellville South Library opened its doors in September 1969 and celebrated its birthday with former colleagues, neighbours, various engaged partners and members of the community, who have supported the library from the beginning and continue to do so.
Bellville South was first part of the municipality’s extended services programme before being recognised as a fully-fledged community library.
At 30 years old, Wesfleur Library in Atlantis has become a beacon for the community with several much-needed and much-appreciated social programmes throughout the year.
Weltevreden Library in Mitchells Plain opened in 1999 with a senior librarian and two librarians. It has since become a daily hive of activity and the staff complement has grown to six engaged staff members who enjoy serving their community with passion.
