Police have arrested three men after finding a hoard of abalone in a Goodwood house being used to process the commonly poached shellfish.
Officers raided 97 Wiener Street, after getting complaints about a foul stench coming from the property.
They found stainless steel pots, plastic containers and burners. Numerous shelves of abalone were found in a fully equipped drying room.
Scales, gas cylinders, boxes and bags of salt were also seized during the operation.
Goodwood police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Hennie Rademeyer said the three suspects, aged 37, 40, 43, held for illegal possession of abalone, appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Thursday Februrary 8, on charges under the Living Marine Resources Act.
