A Kraaifontein taxi driver, 39, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after he knocked down a traffic officer who tried to pull him over at the Bellrail and Robert Sobukwe interchange in Bellville.
The traffic officer was doing routine checks at about 8.30am on Wednesday November 16, when he indicated to the taxi driver to pull off the road.
But the driver refused to stop and instead accelerated, knocking down the officer.
Cape Town traffic services spokeswoman Maxine Jordaan said the officer had been taken to the N1 City Hospital, where he was in a stable condition.
“The taxi driver was arrested and taken to the Bellville police station. A docket was opened for attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and reckless and negligent driving,” said Ms Jordaan.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said police were investigating the incident.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said he was thankful the officer survived the “callous attack”.
It wasn’t the first time an officer had been hit by a minibus driver and he doubted it would be the last.
