Suspects held after two men slain in armed robbery

Police arrested two suspects in the connection with the killing of two men during a robbery at a cellphone shop in Kuils River

Two men, believed to be employees of a cellphone shop, were shot dead during an armed robbery at the De Kuilen Shoprite Centre on Tuesday afternoon July 21 .

Two suspects, aged 20 and 21, were arrested on Belhar Road below the Highbury bridge by City law enforcement officers, who had been radioed at about 2.25pm about a robbery on Van Riebeeck Road, City metro police spokesperson Ruth Solomons said in a statement.

Ms Solomons said City police received a description of the suspects and tracked them to Belhar Road. The suspects had been carrying a 38 Special revolver with five used rounds and one live round and a blank firing pistol with four rounds.

“The officers were later informed that the suspects were linked to a double murder at the Shoprite complex in the Kuils River CBD,” she said, adding that they had been arrested by Kuils River police.

De Kuilen Shoprite centre spokesperson Johan Lourens said the shooting occurred during a robbery at a cellphone shop next to the centre.

Ward 11 councillor Wouter de Vos said one of the men had been shot inside the Shoprite centre while another had been shot outside the store on the main road. The shop faces Van Riebeeck Road.

Two guns were recovered from the two suspects.
