Suspected burglars caught in Avondale

A Parow neighbourhood watch caught two prowlers believed to be linked to a string of Parow burglaries.

According to the police, a woman screamed for help after spotting the two suspects – a man, 33, and a woman, 29, both from Elsies River – trespassing on her property in Orange Street, Avondale, on Tuesday February 20.

“Neighbourhood watch members came to the rescue,” said Parow police spokesman Captain Kevin Williams.

“They caught the suspects and handed them over to police who were conducting patrols in the area. The pair had a white bag on them filled with various items.”

According to Captain Williams, the bag’s contents – worth about R20 000 — included: broken copper pipes, a circular saw, two grinders, a hammer drill, a sander, a kitchen tap mixer and 7m of cable.

“The suspects could not provide ownership of the items and were arrested for being in the possession of presumably stolen property.”

The suspects might be linked to three other burglaries in the Parow precinct, he said.

A policeman arrested two men with stolen copper cables at Parow Park flats on Thursday February 22, at 12.45pm.

Acting on a tip-off, Sergeant Altworth Cupido had found the men in a flat with about 4m of insulated copper cables and 2m of silver steel cable valued at R10 000, said Captain Williams.

The men, aged 40 and 54, appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court.

Three men have been held on drug charges after police officers spotted a plastic bag being thrown from a car in Parow.

The officers pulled over the cream Opel Corsa with three men inside after they saw the driver throw the bag from the car in King Edward Street, said Captain Williams.

“The officers stopped their vehicle and found 16 packets of dagga in the plastic bag. They stopped and searched the car and arrested the men,” he said.

The men — aged 36, 37 and 39 — appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court for being in the possession of drugs.
