Three musicians from the northern suburbs will perform in the annual Youth Classical Concert at the Artscape on Saturday October 5, at 7.30pm.
Clarinetist Nathan Huysamen, 23, from Brackenfell; cellist Ethan Lawson, 23, from Durbanville; and violinist Corban Beukes, 16, from Brackenfell, were among 13 soloists who successfully auditioned to perform with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO).
The concert is a celebration of young musical talent.
“This concert is an important pillar of our youth development programme, for it is here that the soloists as well as the orchestral musicians of the future are honed in their craft,” said Louis Heyneman, the chief executive of the CPO.
Produced by Artscape and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and supported by the City, the annual concert is usually advertised early in the year at local universities, music schools, libraries, and through private music teachers.
The main criteria are that the entrants must be music students and are residents or studying in the Western Cape.
They will perform concertos by Rachmaninoff, Crusell and Mozart among others.
The performance will be conducted by the guest conductor Maestro Bernhard Gueller. The concert master is Philip Martens.
Artscape chief executive, Marlene le Roux, said: “Artscape focuses on the empowerment of youth in the arts with flagship projects such as the youth classical concert as youth development forms an integral part of the cultural institution’s ethos towards building a sustainable performing arts industry.”
Since the inception of this programme in 1971, over 600 young musicians have had the opportunity of performing for the first time with the CPO on the Artscape stage.
The duration of the concert is two hours including a 30-minute interval.
Tickets cost R100 for adults and R50 for students, pupils and pensioners. Book through Webtickets or Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7695.
