The scene of a nitric-acid spill after a truck overturned in Bellville was declared safe on Thursday morning, says the City.
The City’s traffic and fire departments responded to the chemical spill near the intersection of Mike Pienaar Boulevard and Tienie Meyer Bypass on Wednesday.
Nitric acid is used in the production of fertilisers, plastics and dyes. It is also used for making explosives, according to The Chemical Company, a global chemicals supplier.
By 2.30pm on Wednesday, the Tienie Meyer Bypass, Landros Street, Fransie van Zyl Drive, Mike Pienaar Boulevard and Voortrekker Road had been closed to traffic, said City Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs.
The area was made safe by about 4.30am on Thursday, according to City Fire and Rescue spokesman Jermaine Carelse.
“No other vehicles were involved and no one was injured,” he said.
