The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) visited Parkdene Primary School in Scottsdene to raise awareness among Grade 7 pupils about climate change.
The centre runs various workshops on community safety, including things like fires and floods.
“The aim of the school visits is to prepare children for any disasters that may affect their communities,” said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security; and social services.
“More and more we are seeing the effects of climate change around the world, but also on our own doorstep. Cape Town is currently caught in the grip of a drought that is directly linked to climate change.
“It is therefore crucial that we are able to influence the relationship that these young people have with the environment. It’s an opportunity to change their habits and help make a difference,” he said.
