A police officer from Durbanville hopes to continue making a difference in uplifting communities and young children with a fund-raising cricket tournament on Freedom Day where they hope to sponsor 100 children with school shoes.
The Freedom Day Police Cluster tournament takes place at the Tygerberg Cricket Club in Ravensmead on Freedom Day, Thursday April 27, from 9am.
Northern News spoke to Durbanville police officer, Sergeant Richard Fourie, to hear what inspired his idea to form a police cricket team that ploughs back into their communities.
“We formed our team, Durbanville Warriors, four years ago, to honour the memory of one of our colleagues who passed away. It really affected me and I thought of forming a police cricket team where we could support each other to speak about our troubles.
“We later began rolling out this initiative and joined hands with other police stations like Bellville, Kraaifontein and Bothasig. Our goal for the Freedom Day tournament was to uplift the children in the Ravensmead community who are living in poverty and to invite them to the sports field as well as feed and interact with them,“ he said.
Organiser, Bjorn Harmse said last year they had a similar fund-raiser at Tygerberg Cricket Club. “We we raised up to R20 000 that was donated through sponsorships that went towards the cricket club for their social awareness projects,” he said.
The 100 school shoes will be be donated towards two schools in Parow and Ravensmead – the schools that will benefit will be surprised on the day of the handover next month.
