Police arrested five men accused of hijacking a courier driver in De Kuilen on Wednesday.
Kuils River police spokeswoman Sergeant Liesel Beukes said the driver had been delivering a parcel in School Street when two armed men had forced him to hand over the keys to his Isuzu bakkie.
The men drove off with the bakkie and the packages inside it, while the driver contacted police.
The bakkie was found abandoned and empty on the corner of Luike and Kerk streets. Eyewitnesses said the suspects had driven off in a black Ford Fiesta. Police on patrol on the corner of Polkadraai and Strand roads later stopped a vehicle matching that description.
“Five men in their 30s were arrested and are currently being kept at Kuils River police station,” Sergeant Beukes said.
The men are due to appear at Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court once charged.
