The Friends of Elizabeth Park, along with the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) and other groups, has appealed for donations of plants and money to help make the Bellville park safer and cleaner.
Elsieskraal River runs through the park, which is plagued by pollution, soil erosion and invasive plants, among other issues.
“The Friends group currently lacks funding and is actively seeking support, engaging with several individuals and organisations. The timeline will depend on the availability of funding and seasonal considerations,” said Friends chairperson Noorudeen Roman.
The Friends group says about R64 000 is needed initially and about R30 000 annually for work to stop the erosion of the river banks, cleaning and the introduction of indigenous plants including a fynbos garden.
The Friends hopes to start the rehabilitation project by April next year.
Mayoral committee member for community service and health Patricia van der Ross said: “The City’s recreation and parks department is working with various groups to maintain and rehabilitate Elizabeth Park. The Elizabeth Park Friends group and the Greater Tygerberg Partnership are the main partners.”
