Elderly residents received 20 State-subsidised Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses at the Blue Downs/Eerste River Infill Sites Housing Project yesterday.
Pensioner Nopasile Mfuyama, 87, was one of the beneficiaries.
The provincial housing project consists of 184 BNG houses and is 82% complete.
Mayoral committee member for human settlements, Malusi Booi, said: “It is always an honour to be part of a housing handover ceremony because it is an opportunity to congratulate and celebrate with the beneficiaries who are some of our most vulnerable residents for receiving their houses.”
Meanwhile, the housing backlog within the province is in excess of 575 000 and the department can only deliver approximately 18 000 houses per year.
Housing protests and land occupations continue to happen throughout the city.
